BIOGRAPHY

A natural performer at heart, Soprano, Denisha Pompey believes that classical singing found her while attending the University of South Carolina Upstate. Although she went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, her passion for the arts later lead her to Converse University where she also earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Voice Performance.

Always drawn to unique projects, Denisha Pompey made her first operatic stage appearance as the fairy Millie in the Children’s opera Glue by Carrie Leigh Page Drake. The opera was commissioned by the University of South Carolina Upstate as an outreach program. Strongly inspired by Glue’s purpose, Pompey played the character of Millie for the entire three-year production run. Her appreciation for the theater also brought about her roles in Puccini’s La Rondine as Lisette and Susanna in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro for Converse Opera Theater’s opera scenes.

Ms. Pompey has made several performances as a guest solo artist for the Chautauqua Music Series Summer Festival. She also has enjoyed her appearance as Gretel in scenes from Humperdink's Hansel und Gretel with the GSU Opera Theater in conjunction with the Rialto Theater for the Performing Arts for the annual Holiday Gala. She made her international debuts as Lauretta and Nella in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi and Suor Dolcina in Puccini's Suor Angelica with the Mediterranean Opera Studio Festival. After receiving a Master's of Music in Voice Performance from Georgia State University, she was a featured young artist for Marble City Opera performing the role of Lisa in Hugo Weisgall's The Stronger, and appeared as a soloist in Capitol City Opera's Annual Gala. She has also made a successful Carnegie Hall debut as Papagena with concert appearances as Pamina in Mozart's Die Zauberflote. Her Marble City Opera premiere the role of Mary Bowser in Beneath Suspicion was extremely well received. Ms. Pompey looks forward to the telling of other remarkable heroines.
